Idiots... Gay Idiots is a truly unique and unforgettable Cabaret, hosted by Grace Fool and Jennifer Schmennifer. who perform their own acts, as well as four guest gay artistic idiots.
The first of the four acts came from Simon David, a roller-skating gay comedian whose wit and sense of humour were hilarious. Fashionable and sassy, David's persona is likeable and charms the audience quickly with his endless rapid fire of jokes and observations. Furthermore, he had the entire audience singing along to his signature song "Why Am I Wanking to This?" which has witty lyrics and a sadly catchy tune.
The second act was Abby Vicky-Russell as Susie Duncan. Disguised as a front of house team member, Duncan emerges from the audience and maintains the grumpy character throughout. Performing a dog dance duet with her missing dog (Christine), Duncan is hilarious as she overly compensates for her lost Canine companion in her now solo dance number.
The third act of the night was Amando Houser as Delia Delia, the flat chested, green faced witch. This act is a puzzling one, for not a lot actually occurred, yet the audience were entirely enthralled by Delia Delia's infectious laughter and genuine joy at being alive. Delia Delia spends a good portion of their act making high pitched noises which the audience soon began to repeat back to them, leading to hysterical laughter from both sides. Additionally, a tiny wand and a pick up basketball game (front row audience participant) help complete their set.
The Final act was the Dairy King, who delivered such a startlingly unpredictable and utterly unforgettable performance. With a waxy mask, mostly naked with a strapped on human udder (that actually squirt a liquid that one can only hope was water), the Diary King propels the show to unheard heights of what Cabaret shows can be.
The hosts themselves were credible performers, with enjoyable acts. Grace Fool opted to perform an impressive array of lip sync songs, connected by an overarching narrative of auditioning for a talent show, and the mental toll this takes on a performer. The lighting design here is particularly impressive, creating cinematic snapshots of Fool belting (lip sync) out her songs.
Schmmenifer chooses to interact with the audience more, doing fun crowd work (involving having a front row audience member on their knees begging for more in a rather dramatic moment), and pumping up the excitement. Schmennifer also performs her own "fat song", demonstrating powerful vocals.
Schmennifer also brings on a "show twink" (Simon Castle), who holds nothing back and fully commits to the role, and manages to be adorably endearing and sexy all at once.
Fool and Schmennifer also use the show to discuss political themes, delving into the power that drag brings many artists, and creating an empowering movement for other queer artists to follow. Welcoming the wild, embracing the weird and hilarious throughout, Idiots... Gay Idiots is a queer Cabaret like no other.
