Kanan Gill: What is This? | Pleasance Courtyard (Edinburgh Fringe)

As the unaltered ‘About’ section of his website proudly proclaims, Kanan Gill ‘might talk about his origin story, tap into his creativity, and doesn’t need to worry about sounding professional’. He brings all of this and more in a 50 minute comedy tour-de-force, delivering philosophical musings on the only 3 P’s any Indian needs to be happy: property, partner and prayers (adding a pint since we’re in Scotland).

Kanan is clearly an experienced comic, and has the unshakeable confidence to prove it. At one point, he even had the house lights brought up to go schoolteacher on a couple chatting in the middle row. His set is tightly packed, with setups, stories and punchlines woven together like the layers of his (failed) tiramisu. Jokes are made, examined under a self-reflective lens, and then called back to ten minutes down the line to another roar of laughter. As expected a lot of his stories are set in India, but it’s never exclusionary and he deftly brings everyone along for the ride: even when reading out a missing cat notice in Hindi.

From the bureaucracy of buying land to dipping his toes back into the dating pool, he interospects through his situation in life and the power in taking the outside view. There’s a push-and-pull that fills the contents of the entire set, of how to accept yourself while moving forward, or to be grateful while trying to be great. And has he found the answer? You’ll have to watch the set to find out.

In short: a tightly crafted performance delivered by a brilliant comedian – don’t miss out! The show runs until the 25th of August at the Cabaret Bar in the Pleasance Courtyard. For tickets and more information, you can follow the link here.
