Kimberley Bargenquast (Sabrage)

Sabrage is a new production which has opened in the heart of London at Lafayette, infusing comedy, circus and cabaret in a dazzling spectacle. We took the opportunity to speak with Kimberley Bargenquast, who performs aerial acrobats in the show alongside partner Flynn Miller, to tell us more about the show.

Q) Hello - before we begin, please can you introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about Sabrage?

Hello! I’m Kimberley Bargenquast, from Gold Coast, Australia! I am one half of Duo Wonderlust and perform with my Duo partner Flynn Miller in Sabrage. Sabrage is so much more than just a show! Expect a night filled with high energy acts, hilarious comedy, glamorous costumes and much much more, I don’t want to give it all away!

Q) Aerial acrobatics is an extremely disciplined profession - what was it that initially sparked your interest in this skill?

I grew up in a small town in Queensland, Australia where local circuses used to travel to. I still remember watching the amazing aerialists perform under the big top and thinking to myself that is what I want to do when I’m older!

Q) There are many different theatrical elements to this show - cabaret, comedy and circus - how did you find the process of bringing all of these elements together?

Exciting! It is such an amazing blend of genres. The process brought together unique and interesting artists across all genres of performing arts, who all brought something different to the creative process. It was such an amazing opportunity to learn and grow as an artist.

Q) There is a huge element of danger in this type of performance - can you give us an insight on how you maintain focus and concentration during these performances?

Pre show rituals! I have a few rituals before performing which help me maintain focus in our act. Also, a good warm up before show to ensure my body and mind are ready to go! I love practicing pilates and yoga, and training on my apparatus is a priority to ensure my body is fit, healthy and strong to perform our act with complete confidence.

Q) As well as specialising in aerial acrobatics, you also were part of the creative team and performed in four different shows for Cirque Eloize - what is your favourite part of Circus shows?

I love how Circus invites the audience to explore a world of the unimaginable! Circus keeps you on the edge of your seat and creates a 4D experience for the audience. Also, there is nothing better than being part of a circus family of unique individuals!

Q) Lafayette is one of London’s leading music venues currently - how does it feel bringing this production to this space?

As soon as you enter Lafayette - you are transported to another world. It is truly a unique venue and experience and I feel so honoured to be the first cast to bring Sabrage to this venue!

Q) This production is completely different to most shows being staged in London right now -

what is it about this show that stands out from the rest?

It is impossible to not have fun when watching Sabrage! Don’t expect to sit back and relax, the show beckons you to be involved - from grape throwing, to free champagne, pillows and feathers. Without giving away too much the show happens in front of you, above you and all around you!

Q) What can audiences expect and why should audiences come along?

It is edge of your seat entertainment with world class acts, exciting choreography, hilarious jokes, pillow fights, feathers, free champagne, it is an intoxicating mix of comedy, circus, and cabaret. Sabrage is truly a joy to watch & be part of!

Sabrage runs at Lafayette London until Sunday 6th July.
