Lee Mead (Westway Music Sessions) | Vaudeville Theatre

Writer: Darren Betts (he/him)Darren Betts (he/him)

We were very excited  to attend the first of the Westway Music Sessions concerts on Monday to to see the super talented Lee Mead. The concert entitled The Best of Me couldn't be more aptly named, as we were treated to a performance of such versatility and charisma.

Mead shot to fame in 2007 (blimey, was it that long ago?) by winning the reality TV talent show Any Dream Will Do, and this concert reaffirmed exactly why he has remained at the top of his game and is rightly regarded  amongst the best leads in the country. Being held at the beautiful Vaudeville Theatre in London's glittering West End, the smaller size of this theatre made for a more intimate concert feel, which is certainly something that benefited the concert.

Set against a beautifully blue lit stage, Mead, supported by his musical director Adam Dennis and a fab five piece band took us on a journey through his life and career. From recalling his stage debut as a 15 year old Danny Zuko with a great Grease section, to talking about his dream to one day star in The Phantom of the Opera with a beautiful rendition of The Music of the Night, Mead had the audience in the palm of his hand from the very first note.

Yes, as theatre goers, we wanted to hear plenty of musicals numbers and there were many, but the set list showed Mead's huge range and versatility with songs by U2, George Michael and Will Young to name but three, with highlights being a stunning rendition of George Michael's A Different Corner and a beautifully stripped back version of Sting's An Englishman In New York.

We were also treated to a special guest appearance from the amazing Brenda Edwards, who brought the house down with her take on the Oleta Adams classic Get Here (If You Can).

Lee Mead set the bar high here for the rest of the Westway concerts artistes to follow.

Lee is touring this show across the country later this year so be sure to grab a ticket here. To find out more about Westway Music sessions, you can follow the link down below.
