Capturing the world’s attention with Riverdance at Eurovision in 1994, Michael Flatley went on to create Lord of the Dance, embodying his belief that “nothing is impossible; follow your dreams.”
Premiering in 1996, the show toured the world, sold out arenas, and even broke Guinness World Records. Over 25 years later, Lord of the Dance is touring the UK once again, blending the old with the new. With updated costumes, cutting-edge technology and lighting effects, and a thrilling score by Gerard Fahy, the production has been revitalised for modern audiences.
Audiences are treated to 40 spectacular dancers, led by veterans Matthew Smith and Cathal Keaney, as well as live original music performed by Celyn Cartwright, Giada Costenaro, Helena Gullan, and Niamh Leahy. While Flatley’s production follows the classic battle of good versus evil—a familiar narrative—it serves as a solid framework to showcase the incredible talents of the company.
Although Flatley himself is absent from the performance, his presence is still felt through the intricate choreography and videos projected throughout the show.
With 60 million people across 60 countries having witnessed this production, its appeal shows no sign of waning. Even on a rainy Monday night, the theatre was packed, a testament to its enduring popularity.
The audience was fully engaged, cheering and whooping throughout the performance, often spurred on by Smith, our confident and commanding Lord of the Dance.
A lifetime of standing ovations continues—including one on a Monday night in Birmingham.
Lord of the Dance is on at The Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham until 6th October. Get your tickets here.
