Peppa Pig's Fun Day Out | Theatre Royal Newcastle

The best word to describe Peppa Pig’s Fun Day Out is exactly what is on the tin – fun. Although we are not the usual target audience, the laughter and giggles that came from the children served as a testament to the show’s success. The play allows parents to relax as their children gaze in wonder at their favourite television show coming to life. Peppa Pig’s Fun Day Out was a delightful introduction for younger viewers into the magic of theatre.

The set contained vibrant colours that recalled the TV show. The plot loosely follows a fun

day out for Peppa with a trip to the zoo, the beach and ending with Susie Sheep’s surprise

birthday party. Beloved characters from the TV show are present and credit must be given to

the humorous costumes of Mummy and Daddy Pig who are presented by actors in full dress

like mascots. The difficulty of staging a cartoon is tackled using puppetry. The puppets are

operated by actors dressed in all black who join in with songs and dances.

The songs are easy to learn, yet forgettable, however, serve their purpose in the performance as the actors encourage audience participation. Undoubtedly, the star of the show is Peppa’s human friend Chloe (Perrie Sunuwar) who engages the audience with her bubbly personality.

The performance was very engaging to with a total running time of 75 minutes (including an

interval) meaning the audience were not too restless A stand out moment comes from the sequence of animals when Peppa visits the zoo - penguins, butterflies, snakes, and owls

took to the stage in a wondrous display. Actors carried long poles with the butterflies

attached on the end allowing them to swoosh the butterflies around the stage in a beautiful

display, which left the children wide eyed. Scenes such as when George cries and water is

sprayed upon the audience caused eruptions of laughter from younger viewers.

Peppa Pig’s Fun Day Out offers a magical experience for children to dive into the world of theatre, so they can see in real life something from their screens. A perfect show for families to get children out of the house and experience magic on stage.
