Spy Movie: The Play | Pleasance Courtyard, Beneath (Edinburgh Fringe)

The name’s Blonde. Jane Blonde. And protagonist of this hilarious spy movie parody that’ll leave you shaken (not stirred) with laughter.

From two of the minds behind The New Musketeers (Trinity Theatre) and stars of The Play That Goes Wrong and Peter Pan Goes Wrong, Spy Movie: The Play! is an utterly mad yet undeniably entertaining love letter to spy movies and fringe theatre. Queue DIY-infused train chase scenes, laser beam gymnastics, and an outer space 4D experience!

When a hopeless screenwriter gets her newest script rejected, she pitches her ambitious idea to a room of producers (us) in the hopes of securing funding for her severely underfunded vision…

Agent Blonde has 24 hours to save the world. Recruiting the help of novelist Ian Flemish she takes down villain after villain, from Mr and Mrs Hugs to Sir Lovely and Sir Jubbly (all characters as ridiculous as they sound), and rounds off her mission in a spaceship slash villain headquarters where the likes of Liz Truss, Jacob Rees-Mogg and Penny Mordaunt populate, taking them all down in an epic battle and ensuring world peace once and for all.

The comedic timing is faultless, if anything you may struggle to keep up! There are jokes and puns round every corner of the script, accompanied by clever use of puppets, props and many a fake moustache. The writing is slick, witty and makes every use of spy-related material while keeping the show family friendly and entertaining even to the non-spy movie fans.

With its sharp writing, perfectly executed gags, and a cast that throws themselves into the madness with unbridled enthusiasm, this production is a must-see for anyone who loves a good parody, clever humour and a trip to the theatre that’s sure to leave you licensed to thrill.

Spy Movie! The Play runs at Pleasance Courtyard until 26th August - for more information and tickets, you can follow the link here.
